Chelsea owner, Roman Abramowich has confirmed he’s actively looking to sell the club as the political situation surrounding high-value Russian individuals is progressively worsening.
“I would like to address the speculation in media over the past few days in relation to my ownership of Chelsea FC. As I have stated before, I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the Club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the Club, the fans, the employees, as well as the Club’s sponsors and partners.
The sale of the Club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process. I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and Club. Moreover, I have instructed my team to set up a charitable foundation where all net proceeds from the sale will be donated. The foundation will be for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine. This includes providing critical funds towards the urgent and immediate needs of victims, as well as supporting the long-term work of recovery.
Please know that this has been an incredibly difficult decision to make, and it pains me to part with the Club in this manner. However, I do believe this is in the best interest of the Club.
I hope that I will be able to visit Stamford Bridge one last time to say goodbye to all of you in person. It has been a privilege of a lifetime to be part of Chelsea FC and I am proud of all our joint achievements. Chelsea Football Club and its supporters will always be in my heart”.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was reported that Roman was weighing up the prospect of selling the club and was closely monitoring people who would be interested in buying the club.
His plans were confirmed recently as he gave an official statement in relation to the club’s ownership situation on Chelsea’s official website.
The club is currently valued at £3bn. Roman has refused to take the debt that was owed to him by Chelsea and has further stated he’d donate all net proceedings to the war victims of Ukraine.
His decision is predominantly motivated by the growing pressure from the UK as the government started targeting high-value Russian individuals who may have ties with Vladimir Putin following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Although owner Roman Abramowich has vehemently contested the allegations linking him to the Russian president, it was however revealed in the UK parliament that he was a person of interest to the Home Office because of his affiliation with the Russian government and his involvement in corruption practices. A leaked document was presented in the parliament to establish the legitimacy of the claims.
Since then, the grip around these high-profile Russian dignitaries is tightening and will continue to tighten even further. This fear is what drove Abramowich to immediately resolve the club situation since relinquishing the club’s control to the trustees didn’t result in the expected outcome as they reportedly resisted the change.
It was informed that the trustees tried to consult the legal team before responding to Roman’s handover decision as they believed a charity foundation wouldn’t be an appropriate fit to manage the running of a football club.
Who’s likely to takeover the club following Roman’s step-down:
Swiss billionaire, Hansjörg Wyss is among those who were offered the transfer of ownership of the club. But he didn’t appear to agree with the amount the club was priced at.
“Abramovich is currently trying to sell all his villas in England. He also wants to get rid of Chelsea quickly now. I, along with three other people, received an offer on Tuesday to buy Chelsea from Abramovich”.
Wyss also added:
“I have to wait four to five days now. Abramovich is currently asking far too much. You know, Chelsea owe him £2billion [it is £1.5billion]. But Chelsea has no money. That means: those who buy Chelsea should compensate Abramovich.”
Hansjörg Wyss told the press that he was forming a consortium with three American businessmen but was uncertain about the exact asking price. There might have been recent developments on that front but for now, it remains unclear who will buy the club and for what price.
So far, there has been no confirmation on the person who’s shortlisted for the takeover of the club. But his sudden decision to sell the club has sent shockwaves in the football world as he was literally considered Chelsea’s backbone.
It was under his ownership that the club witnessed its historic rise to success and glory. Roman’s continued dedication was the reason Chelsea were able to break the stronghold of clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal dominating the English Football.
Him leaving the club’s reins in the hands of someone who might not prioritise the club’s success and well-being as much as him could inarguably set the club back. These are indeed testing times for the club and the fans.

The first goal came in response to a VAR call for a foul committed by Saiss on Romelu Lukaku as both players were caught up in a tangle on the edge of the penalty area.

Chelsea released an official statement in the early hours of Saturday morning confirming that the terms have been agreed with the LA Dodgers’ part-owner Todd Boehly’s consortium to complete the £4.25bn takeover of the club though the acquisition is yet to be approved by the Premier League authorities as well as the UK government.

Last week, it was revealed that Todd Boehly & Co were Raine Group’s preferred choice to succeed Roman Abramovich following which the group were given one-week window of exclusive negotiations with the club to finalise the takeover. The deal had appeared in doubt due to late interest from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, however, those fears were dissipated as the Ratcliffe bid was later dismissed on account of his inability to complete the sale process by May 31st – the date when Chelsea’s current license expires.
Although the group is fronted by Todd Boehly, private equity firm Clearlake Capital is the one providing the majority of the financial firepower to it. The consortium also includes Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, Boehly’s fellow LA Dodgers’ owner Mark Walter and the British property developer Jonathan Goldstein.
As per Chelsea’s official statement, the £4.25bn headline sum includes the £2.5bn cost required to secure shares in Chelsea – which will go into a frozen UK bank account for the purpose of releasing 100 per cent of the proceeds to charitable causes – the remaining £1.75bn is the amount the group have committed to invest in the club’s future, covering costs regarding redevelopment projects and ensuring there are sufficient funds in place for operational use.
‘The proposed new owners will commit £1.75bn in further investment for the benefit of the Club. This includes investments in Stamford Bridge, the Academy, the Women’s Team and Kingsmeadow and continued funding for the Chelsea Foundation’.
The Clause also placed a limit on the debt the new owners can place on the club.
It also made sure the group pledged £1.75B to be invested in Chelsea's male and female teams, the academy, stadium, and the Chelsea Foundation.

Few final, obligatory steps remain in the official transfer of ownership of Chelsea Football Club to Todd Boehly’s consortium, one of which requires all group members to complete the Premier League Owners’ and Directors’ Test. Furthermore, Chelsea will have to apply for the amended license from the UK government that would upgrade the club’s operational capacity in addition to allowing the transaction to go ahead. The preparations are underway as the Raine Group wants the sale process to reach its completion as soon as possible.

N’Golo Kante had sustained a knock in the game against Manchester United, consequently missing last weekend’s trip to Everton where his fellow midfielder Jorginho was taken off the pitch at interval.
‘For N’Golo it comes too early. Jorginho is out as well, these two are missing. Callum and Ben Chilwell are still out,’ said the Blues boss.
The duo’s unavailability will give way to introducing Kovačić and most likely RLC in their stead as the latter is currently enjoying an upturn in form.
Mateo Kovačić returned to action as a half-time substitute last weekend after missing a couple games on account of nursing an ankle injury. He stands the highest chance of featuring a start in tomorrow’s game v Wolves.
There is a growing feeling that Tuchel might give Romelu Lukaku a start tomorrow, considering his substitute Kai Havertz is also struggling to find the form that has recently deserted him.
Thomas Tuchel has expressed optimism regarding Lukaku’s reaction in training this week. The Blues boss said;
‘I want him to be an important part of the squad, right now he is very important. There is no recruitment and no players are about to leave because it’s simply not possible,’
